Whether it's spring, summer, fall or winter, come enjoy the view of our skyscrapers - the San Juan Mountains - and enjoy all of South Fork's finest at The Spruce Lodge. 





South Fork offers over 250 miles of groomed trails as well as plenty of side trails, open parks, meadows and hills to climb from 8,200ft to 12,000ft. Most of these trails follow Forest Service roads and can be used in the winter by snowmobiles and cross country skiers and in the summer by 4-wheelers, rock hounds, photographers, artists, hunters, fishermen, hikers and mountain bikers.

The Town of South Fork: Located at the junction of the famous Rio Grande River and its south fork. Where highway 160 & 149 meet in the center of town, you will find the beginning of the historic Silver Thread National Scenic Byway, a spectacular route that follows the winding Rio Grande to its headwaters in the San Juan Mountains. Visitors can have a fun time just walking through town visiting the park, the river, the malt shoppe, the visitors center, art galleries, and more.

Spring/Summer Activities

Rafting: Spruce Lodge has rafts for rent for river rafting on the Rio Grande that is enjoyed by novices as well as the experienced rafter from early May through August. Bring along you camera to shoot the picturesque scenery and wildlife as you float the miles of river as it flows through winding canyon and forest. Anglers can enjoy the thrill of fishing while rafting or wading the gold medal waters. A 2 1/2 hour trip starts at $28 per person for adults. Discounts are available for registered guests.



 Golf: A beautiful new challenging golf course is located behind The Spruce Lodge.

 

Fishing: The South Fork of the Rio Grande offers good stream and bank fishing, wading, bait, cast and fly fishing for browns, rainbows, and brooks. It is accessible by car with some walk-in areas. More info...

ATV - Mountain Biking - 4 Wheeling: Whether you choose a maintained forest service road or a rough trail to the back woods you are sure to find something to fit your level and time schedule including anything from a couple of hours of fun in the sun, to a full day of the most beautiful rugged high mountain terrain, only viewed from the roughest 4X4s. You can bicycle ride in the mountains or around South Fork and enjoy our beautiful scenery and wildlife as you ride, on any of the numerous trails within the San Luis Valley. Bicycle rentals are available.  More info...

Horseback Riding: Horses are available to rent 10-15 minutes away. Group guided rides including rides for children and back country tours.

Auto - Motorcycle Tours to Nearby Towns

Creede (and Beyond): Take a 30 minute scenic drive to Creede. Historic buildings and names from a bygone era mark the quaint seven-block downtown section of Creede’s famous silver mining era. The spectacular Pillars of Hercules, volcanic cliffs rising nearly a thousand feet at the edge of town, frame Creede’s array of shops, galleries, eateries, lodging, and sundry services. Simply viewing the old downtown area against this magnificent canyon backdrop makes a visit to Creede worthwhile in any season. More on Creede...

Pagosa Hot Springs: Beautiful hot springs with varying sizes of pools and varying temperatures is open all year around approximately 30 minutes from The Spruce Lodge.

Fall/Winter

Photo Safari: There is no more beautiful place to be in the Fall when the aspens turn colors. The opportunities for getting that one spectacular shot are found right here. If you want access to the back country - horse, jeep, and atv rentals are available.

Hunting: Big game hunters arrive every fall from all parts of the United States to take on the challenge of nature offered in the San Juan Mountains and San Luis Valley. The Spruce Lodge is an excellent place to stay. You can rise early in the morning and in a few minutes be out in your drawn area. We can pack a lunch for you and when you return there will be a hot meal available next door. After dinner, enjoy the hot tub. Why rough it? Let the deer and elk do that!

Moose Sighting: Take an evening safari into the mountains to spot moose.

Skiing: Skiers also find challenge and enjoyment as they attack the slopes of Wolf Creek, which is known for the most snow in Colorado.

Other winter activities in the area include cross-country skiing, sleigh riding, snowmobiling, ice-skating, and ice fishing.
